Late Registration and Other Thoughts
• it is possible to register late via the Internet – HOWEVER, there is a $50 fee for this service, and it should not be used except in an emergency. In order to register late, a school must call the GACS Office directly and make arrangements to do so.
• You may pay your Fine Arts fees in two installments, but you must send your first payment, ALONG WITH A PRINTOUT OF THE TALLY SHEET, postmarked by the day after Internet registration closes. The easiest way for us to record this is if you pay all of one or two types of fees at a time. For example: 1st payment – all JH/SH fees, 2nd payment – all other fees. If you choose to pay in installments, the final payments are due on January 30 for Secondary and March 3 for Elementary.
• Do your best to find out how many parents and other visitors will attend the competition. However, if you cannot finalize this number until closer to the event, don’t worry about it too much. Just call us by March 1st with your estimate. The reason we ask for the number is to give those preparing meals an idea of how many to expect, and we give them this number about a week before the event. Any visitors to the competition not attending in an official capacity may purchase lunch tickets at the registration desk on that day.
• For Elementary competition, anyone who wishes to eat lunch on campus must pay for it ahead of time, as the lunches are catered. You may send a check for the number of additional lunches needed by the first week in April. Anyone who has not purchased a lunch ticket in advance will have to eat off campus or bring their own lunch.
• Be sure to double and triple check your internet registrations. Go back and check again two or three days after you think it’s all done, just to be sure. If you’ve forgotten something, or information has been lost in cyberspace, it is MUCH easier to correct or replace EARLY in the registration process. When you are certain all your registration is done, print out the ISP REPORT and keep it on file. If anything gets lost on our end, this is your proof that it was our fault!
• Due to the tremendous volume of work involved in processing the dozens of applications coming to the GACS office, we must ask for everyone’s cooperation in sending materials and payments on time. This is vital if we are to prepare the academic tests to be sent to your school on time, get necessary information to the judges, do all the scheduling and get schedules printed and mailed to you a few days before competition! No applications for competition will be accepted if postmarked after the dates listed on the calendar. Any changes to registration must be made within one week after the registration deadline, and no additional changes (other than drops) will be made past that point.
• The week for changes is also the week for refunds. Once that deadline has passed, no drops will be refunded.

FARWeb Q & A
Q: How do I remove a student completely?
A: This is a two step process. First you must remove the student from any categories he’s been entered in. You can do this by following the directions under How do I delete a student from a group and How do I delete an individual entry. Once you’ve done this for all the student’s categories, from the Main Menu, choose the Student page and click the EDIT button beside the student’s name. In the new window that pops up, click the DELETE button, then the SAVE button, then the CLOSE button to return to the Student page. To view the change you’ve made, click on your browser’s refresh (reload) button. The student’s name should no longer be on the list.
Q: How do I delete a student from a group?
A: From the Main Menu, choose the Registration page. Choose the Area and Category. In the box of Selected Students, click on the name you want to remove, then click on the button that points back to the Eligible Students box. This moves the student’s name out of the Selected Students box. Click SAVE at the bottom of the page to lock in the change.
Q: How do I delete an individual entry?
A: From the Main Menu, choose the Registration page. Choose the Area and Category. In the box that contains the name of the student you want to remove, choose the blank space at the top of the list. Click SAVE at the bottom of the page to lock in the change.
Q: How do I delete an entire group?
A: From the Main Menu, choose the Registration page. Choose the Area and Category. In the box of Selected Students, highlight all the student names, then click on the button that points back to the Eligible Students box. This moves the students’ names out of the Selected Students box. Delete any other information, such as director name, accompanist, etc. Click SAVE at the bottom of the page to lock in the change.
Q: I’ve made enough mistakes to make me want a clean slate. Is there any way to clear all my data and start over?
A: We can do this from our office – all we need is an email from you. Be sure you really want to do it though; with a click of the mouse we can wipe out hours of work!
Q: How can I see a summary of who’s entered in what categories so far?
A: From the Main Menu, choose the ISP Report page. Choose whether you want the report grouped by Student or Event, then click the BUILD REPORT button. This will generate a list of everything you’ve entered so far.
Q: I entered some information, but when I went back to look at it, it was gone. What happened?
A: You forgot to click the SAVE button after entering information. This might happen a couple times until you get used to how the system works. Whenever you enter information, you must click on the SAVE button before going anywhere else in the system. The SAVE function is what actually sends the information you’ve typed to our database, so if you click BACK or choose another category before you click SAVE, you haven’t sent us your information yet.
Q: What if I forget to click SAVE and move on. Is all that typing lost?
A: Probably not. Try using the back button on your browser (not the one on the webpage). Most likely your data will be right where you left it, waiting to be saved.
Q: What if my figures for the fees don’t match what the Tally Sheet says?
A: Print out the Tally Sheet and the ISP Reports, then compare them carefully with your records. It might help to have someone else go over it with you. If, after comparing things thouroughly, you cannot find the problem, email us with your figures and we will check it from this end. We have done extensive testing on the system, but there is always the possibility that we missed a bug.

Guitar
Guitar is NOT a string instrument for fine arts participation. Yes, I know that classical guitar is a legitimate and beautiful instrument, but I was unsuccessful in getting it added to the AACS Manual in 2010. I will try again in 2015. Sorry.

Chuck Nicholas Provides Help for Duet Acting and Choric Speaking
I teach Drama at Bob Jones Academy and Dr. Bryant has asked me to give you some Duet Acting Sources.
The best sources are from plays that you find and cut yourself at Bakers, Dramatists, and Samuel French. When you cut from the whole, you know what you are getting.
Brooklyn Publishing and Mushroom Press (both are Internet based) have scripts that you can buy from a catalog that is online. Google the sites. I believe one of the sites will let you read a few pages of the script as a preview. Generally you pay for two scripts and you get the right to perform in competition without any royalties due. Trouble is they are both secular sources and will have some objectionable elements in them. Personally, I edit them for class. Of course some are more suitable than others.
I believe Nicky Chavers at the Academy of Arts has a website called Findaspeech.com that would have Christian cuttings. There is also an old source called Wetmore Declamation Bureau that sells scripts. I believe that you can Google both sites.
Hopefully this helps,
Chuck Nicholas

The Approved Music Manual for 2010 has been updated and corrected. If you purchased a 2010 Music Manual earlier be sure to contact us for the free revision. Material from 2011 fine arts season has been added to the manual. As a result, there is no 2011 addendum.

Original Copies of Performed Works
There appears to be some confusion over how many original copies of music are needed. The school should own an original for everyone that uses the piece (student, accompanist, and director). That does not mean that you cannot use authorized copies during the performance and give the judges copies to write on (you should never give judges originals to write on).
For the sake of uniformity and in case of challenge from a judge on-site, I would say you that you need to bring the originals to the performance in case you are challenged. Just keep them in a box or something. Better safe than sorry.

Fine Arts Rules Changes
Notification of Changes from AACS -- Please pass on to your Fine Arts Coordinator
Debate – Rule 3 (AACS Competition Manual 2010, p. 40) states that AACS competition “will adhere to the rules published by the National Forensic League.” The NFL has developed guidelines for allowing the use of computers in competition. Each NFL district is allowed to determine whether or not to allow the use of computers in the district-level competition. AACS has determined that computers will be allowed at the national level. The guidelines for computer use as published by the NFL will be followed. The guidelines are below:
At its fall meeting, the NFL Board of Directors approved computer use in all debate events using the existing computer use guidelines for Policy Debate that are published in the district and national tournament manuals (see below). Permission to use laptop computers at NFL district competitions will be the autonomous decision of each individual district committee. Laptop use: The use of laptop computers in Policy, Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas, and Congressional Debate is permitted at the NFL Speech & Debate National Tournament. The use of laptop computers in any event at the district competition will be the autonomous decision of each individual district committee. Guidelines for Laptop Use in Debate Events
A. Computers equipped with removable wireless cards must have the cards removed before the beginning of any round of competition. It is the responsibility of the contestant to disengage the equipment.
B. Computers with built-in wireless capability may be used only if the wireless capability is disabled. It is the responsibility of the contestant to disable the equipment.
C. Wired connections (Ethernet or phone) during rounds of competition are not permitted.
D. Computers or other electronic devices may not be used to receive information from any source (coaches or assistants included) inside or outside of the room in which the competition occurs. Internet access, use of e-mail, instant messaging, or other means of receiving information from sources inside or outside of the competition room
are prohibited. (This does not prohibit non-electronic communication between debate partners during prep time if applicable.)
E. Penalty: Contestants found to have violated provisions A through C above will forfeit the round of competition and receive zero NFL points. Contestants found to have violated provision D (above) will be disqualified from the tournament and will forfeit all rounds and NFL points. At NFL district tournaments, the district committee will make the final decision concerning disqualification. In case of a serious dispute or critical question, the acting tournament referee (representing the national office) can be contacted for a ruling.
F. Availability of Evidence: Contestants electing to use computers have the responsibility to provide promptly a copy of any evidence read in a speech for inspection by the judge or opponent. Printers may be used. Evidence may be printed in the round or produced electronically, but must be provided in a format readable by the opposing team and the judge.
G. Contestants electing to use computers are responsible for providing their own computers, batteries, extension cords, and all other necessary accessories. Tournament hosts will not be responsible for providing computers, printers, software, paper, or extension cords for contestants.
H. Because public speaking decorum remains an important element of debate, all debaters are expected to stand at the front of the room and face the judge while speaking.
I. Contestants choosing to use laptop computers and related equipment accept the risk of equipment failure. Judges and/or contest directors will give no special consideration or accommodation, including no additional speech time or prep time, should equipment failure occur.
J. By choosing to use laptop computers in the round, debaters are consenting to give tournament officials the right to search their files. Debaters who do not wish to consent should not use computers in the round/.
